From AngryAsianMan.com: red dawn: the chinese invaders are coming

They’re remaking Red Dawn, the cold war movie that starred Patrick Swayze.

For those who are unfamiliar with the original Red Dawn, or perhaps too young to remember, the movie’s about a group of midwestern teenagers who band together to save their town when Soviet forces invade the United States. Remember, this movie was produced in the middle of the Cold War, and probably scared the crap out of a lot of people back in 1984.

Only this time around, the foreign invaders in the remake are — of course — the Chinese (with Russian assistance). Not really surprising, considering all the rhetoric out there about China and its two billion people taking over, well, everything. I’m with Jen, who wonders if there’s any way to do Red Dawn with a Chinese enemy without it being totally racist?

How would you feel if a Chinese company remade this movie with American soldiers invading a Chinese city with Chinese high school students fighting back and killing American soldiers?

Between the United States and China, which country has a recent history of invading other countries?

    It’s a M-O-V-I-E.

You know, when you post anonymously, I still know who you are. That’s the beauty of the internet and IP addresses.
Anyways, to answer your comment, I realize it’s a movie. Movies can be powerful in shaping how society sees things. I just don’t want to see some kook taking out Chinese people in the mall because they saw this movie ala “the Matrix”. Plus, there’s no way they’re going to be able to make this film without using a bunch of offensive Chinese stereotypes.
Answer the question. How would you feel about a movie portraying American invaders with Chinese students fighting back?

Good – now you know how I feel. I also know about IP addresses. Hence, my lack to bother with names.
To answer your next question, movies are movies. You can interpret just about anything from any movie. Would the reverse bother me? No. The movie has a plot. It has a story. It does not dictate all of society.
There are offensive stereotypes for every race and gender. There comes a point where you have to quit taking things so personally. And yes – EVERYONE faces offensive stereotypes.

So, according to your logic, books are just books too? I know of a few books that have had some “minor” influence on society.
I think you underestimate the role that movies can play in shaping society and beliefs. If you believe that everyone faces offensive stereotypes equally, I’d have to disagree with you.
There may be a point to quit taking things so personally, but we haven’t reached that point yet.

Well BS to that. One movie yes, two movies maybe but when your subjected to these Fkd up movies/stereo-types all the time you get freaking tired of it.
Check out almost every Hollywood movie that Asian Americans are in. You’ll see.

I think you’re trying to agree with me, right? I think Asian Americans definitely get the shaft in terms of stereotypes.
