Are there 13 Cylon Models in Battlestar Galactica?

This is a random Battlestar Galactica thought that I had while driving to work.

There are 12 human colonies.
There are 12 Cylon models.

But if you count Earth, there are actually 13 colonies.  Maybe there are actually 13 models of Cylons instead of 12 with 2 that have not been revealed.

If they reveal the 12th Cylon sooner as opposed to later and is a relatively minor character like Tom Zarek or equivalent, I believe that it would be a decoy for the biggest surprise, the 13th Cylon that would be revealed in the finale.  I believe that the 13th Cylon would then be a very major character like Starbuck, Admiral Adama, Baltar, or President Roslin and would happen near the very end.  It would be a total surprise for all the characters and the audience because we’re all thinking that once the 12th Cylon has been revealed that there are no more unknown “skin jobs” left.  But, then we’d be wrong and surprised in the finale.

I know that the show states that there are 12 in the opening sequence, but this show is all about breaking conventions, so what’s one more here?

UPDATE:  2/14/2009
The 13th Cylon model has been confirmed, a “seven” model named Daniel.  Described as artistic, but somehow corrupted by the Cylon model Cavil.  I think that Daniel is related to Starbuck in someway.  Perhaps it’s her father, or it could still be Starbuck herself.

UPDATE: 3/17/2009
According to Ronald D. Moore, Daniel is not a significant character.
From battlestar_blog

“…I should probably say as a sidenote — I know that there is a tremendous amount of speculation out there on the Internet — that Kara is the daughter of Daniel or that Daniel, Daniel being the Cylon model that was killed or destroyed or aborted, however you want to choose to define it, by Cavil, that there’s a connection between Daniel and Kara and that’s part of the revelations that we’re gonna reveal in the finale. I don’t typically want to, like, put theories to rest, because it kinda spoils the enjoyment and fun of people in the show, however I do think it’s worth saying that that is not part of the plan.

UPDATE: 3/24/09
The 13th Cylon pretty much is a non-issue.  I think Ronald D. Moore and the writers mentioned the 13th Cylon just to fix their screwed up numbering.

    Hi

That’s interesting. I’ve never really thought exactly what the Six in Baltar’s Head or the Baltar in Six’s head is. Maybe it is a manifestation of the 13th Cylon. Thanks for your comment!

in S4E11 episode we find out that Cara Thrace is a cylon AND also that Tie’s (the XO) wife was a cylon…
so we got at least 13 models now.
But maybe… they all are cylons resurrected by unknwon resurrection facility

You’re right, it looks like Kara Thrace- Starbuck may be a 13th Cylon.

I was thinking the same thing. Kara as a possible thirteenth. Especially since the hybrid keeps referring her to the harbinger of death. Whose death? Human or cylon or both. Maybe Kara is to destroy both to insure that it won’t happen again. “All this has happened before, all this will happen again.”

there are 17 with 4 standard modles and 1 of the 5 still unknown

I don’t know where you’re getting 17. The Final five are all known and counted within the 12. The main question remains what is Starbuck? If Starbuck is a Cylon then she’d be the 13th.

Kara could be the 13th and here is why.
She is blown up along with her plane and both come back like new.
Go online and count the model numbers.
There are 7 models known and 5 that just found out about. That number equals 12.
Then why is there a model number 8?
Model 7 is missing. What happened to the 7th model.

Here’s an idea i thought up. We know that the final five have come from earth, and that there was some type of civil war there. So who were the people/cylons that started the war on earth…which leaves the question to be answered that there are more models of the 13th colony that perhaps we will see in future episodes, you may even be thinking Starbuck could be one of these 13th colony cylon models. Why not since you see her dead body on Earth and perhaps these other cylon models have their own version of resurection…which leads to Starbuck being the harbinger of death who will unconciously lead the final five back to the other final models from Earth, where some unsettled score will be confronted…Just an idea, i love mysteries and the current episodes of Battlestar G. definitely offer it up.

There are actually 13 known… models 1 through 8, plus the final 5. Kara would make 14.

After Friday’s episode, I’m thinking that Kara’s dad must have been the Cylon #7, Daniel, making her a hybrid. However, that doesn’t explain Kara finding her dead body on Earth.

I think that Adama is a cylon. In the final chapter, during the job interview, they ask him “Are you a cylon? Just a control question”
Adama answers “No” and after the next question he leaves the interview.

Having rewatched the series. It irritates me they dont just reveal it. I mean, why mention an 8th model if there was no point. The fact that its name is Daniel leads me to believe its a male.
1 reason it may be Adama, besides him possibly failing that interview at the end, is the fact that Tigh, a cylon, is his closest friend and he has known Tigh 30 years.
Baltar I feel is human because he was technically dead for about a minute and didnt get reborn, plus it feels like his relationship with Caprica six is some sort of eternal affair since they both appear as “angels” of a sort and this represents the human/cylon relationship.
Now Daniel being Kara’s father seems very likely. For one he appeared to Kara but not to anyone else. It may also explain Kara’s preternatural abilities as a pilot. Also, her mother’s obsession about Kara being “special”. Perhaps the father revealed what he was to the mother?

@anonymous I think your analysis sounds good to me. The 13th cylon could have helped explain Starbuck and other loose ends, but it seems like the writers just dropped the ball on this.
